Thunderbird Avenue Soil Anchor Retaining Walls
Structural Design Maricopa County
Structural Grace, Inc. provided a design concept report and final structural engineering design services for new soil nail retaining wall system required for the widening of the New River Channel at Thunderbird Road Bridge. In order to increase the New River channel under Thunderbird Road, the earth slopes at the abutments were cut back from the existing 2:1 abutment slopes and vertical soil nail retaining walls were constructed behind the new sidewalk locations utilizing tie-back anchors. Existing abutments were supported on drilled shaft foundations extending approximately 15 feet above the new sidewalk elevation. The wall design implemented FHWA criteria and the details were coordinated with the Construction Manager at Risk prior to implementation.
