Old US 80 – Gila River Bridge

Construction Survey Maricopa County, Arizona

The Historic Old US 80 Bridge over the Gila River in Maricopa County, a 9-span steel truss structure originally constructed in 1927 as part of the “Coast-to-Coast” highway, is the longest structure of its type remaining in Arizona today. Structural Grace, Inc. prepared a load rating per the AASHTO LRFR (Load and Resistance Factor Rating) method.

The load rating addressed truss members damaged by vehicle impacts, corroded anchorages, and bearings locked in place by corrosion. It also included recommendations to address these bridge deficiencies.
